Most things are answered below. If yours isn't, there's a real person at the bottom of the page.
How Ember works
- Set up in two minutes. When you first open the app, tell Ember your first name, the time you'd like your morning verse, and one to three areas you want to grow in. Your time zone is detected automatically; you can change it in Settings.
- Morning verse. At your chosen time, Ember sends a push notification with one verse (and its reference) plus a short reflection or prayer based on what you've shared. Tap it to open the thread.
- Chat any hour. Open the app and write. Ember replies in a few short lines. Ask it to pray, ask a question, or just tell it how the day went.
- Memory and follow-ups. Mention something coming up ("interview Thursday") and Ember will check in the morning of and the day after. On Sunday evenings it sends a short reflection on your week. In Settings you can see and remove what it remembers.
- Check-ins. Ember occasionally nudges you on your growth areas. Never more than one unprompted message a day besides the morning one, nothing between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and it backs off automatically if you stop replying.
Common questions
My morning verse didn't arrive.
Check three things: (1) iPhone Settings → Notifications → Ember → Allow Notifications is on; (2) Focus or Do Not Disturb isn't silencing Ember at that hour; (3) in the app, Settings → Morning time and time zone are what you expect. If all of that looks right and it's still missing, email us with the date and your time zone and we'll look at the logs.
How do I change my morning time or growth areas?
In the app, go to Settings. Morning time, time zone, and growth areas are all editable there and take effect from the next morning.
How do I pause Ember for a while?
Settings → Pause. Ember stops sending morning messages and check-ins until you resume. Your subscription keeps running while paused; cancel it with Apple if you want billing to stop too.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us. Open iPhone Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → Ember → Cancel Subscription. If you cancel during the free trial you won't be charged. If you cancel later, you keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.
Can I get a refund?
Apple decides refunds for App Store purchases, and we can't issue them ourselves. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find Ember, and choose "Request a refund". Apple usually responds within a couple of days.
How do I delete my data?
In the app: Settings → Delete everything → confirm. Your name, settings, conversations, memories, and push token are erased immediately and can't be recovered. This doesn't cancel your Apple subscription; do that separately in iPhone Settings. You can also email us and we'll delete it by hand.
Is Ember a real person?
No. Ember is an AI. We say so in the app and on this site, and Ember will tell you if you ask. It isn't a pastor or a counsellor, and it will point you to your church and the people around you when that's the honest thing to do.
Ember said something that felt wrong.
Sometimes it will. It's software, and it makes mistakes. Please email us the message (a screenshot is perfect) so we can look at it and fix the pattern. Test everything it says against Scripture and your own community.
I'm in a crisis right now.
Please don't wait for an app. In the US, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) any time, or call 911 in an emergency. Outside the US, call your local emergency number. Ember is built to point you to these lines too, but a real person on the phone is better.
Is there an Android version?
Not yet. Ember is iPhone-only for now.
